About This Guide
Shane McElligott has over twenty years of experience as an outdoor/adventure instructor. His introduction to kayaking took place with his cousins in Dublin Bay when he was fifteen years old through a scout troop based in the area. Since then Shane has been involved in a wide range of outdoor activities as a participant, instructor and instructor trainer in Ireland and abroad.
Having worked for organisations such as Kinsale Outdoor Education Centre, University of Limerick Activity Centre, Kinsale College of Further Education, Cappanalea Outdoor Education Centre and Oysterhaven Activity Centre as a multi activity outdoor instructor – Shane has also run his own freelance instructor and instructor training business since 2006. As well as running kayak instructor training courses for all of Canoeing Irelands white-water instructor awards, Shane is also a dinghy instructor trainer with the Irish Sailing Association.
Shane’s experience also includes working as a guide with Atlantic sea kayaking and H2O Sea Kayaking in the Cork area as well as assisting on and leading Alpine white-water trips for Tiglin (The former National Adventure Centre) H2O extreme, Canoeing Ireland and The Kayak Company. His role included guiding clients on half day, day long and multi-day kayaking trips in a wide variety of challenging environments.
Shane has competed in kayak freestyle in Ireland and is also involved in the ongoing development of kayak instructor training in Ireland through the National Governing Body – Canoeing Ireland. He is also the owner of Roundstone Outdoors, a kayak touring and Stand-Up Paddleboarding company based in Roundstone, Connemara, County Galway in the west of Ireland. He also co-runs The Bogbean café and B&B in the area with his partner.
Shane’s ethos of guiding is based on exploring the incredible seashore environment, facilitating people’s experiences in such versatile craft as sea kayaks and enjoying the concept of just being in nature and sharing the environment with other like-minded people.
